Diabetes Awareness {Guest Post}

In this world we live in today, more and more children are becoming obese. This is a touchy subject with a lot of people because many people just don’t know what to do or how to stop it! How do you change your ways? How do you change your eating habits? It’s something that NEEDS to be talked about and not just swept under the rug.

Today I have Carolyn here from Full on Fit to raise awareness!

Holiday Season with Diabetes Awareness: Helping Kids

Kids love the holidays, no matter which ones they are – and who doesn’t? Presents, sweet treats, fun decorations; it’s a time all about having fun and being with friends and family. This past November, National Diabetes Awareness Month kicked into full gear, and for the first time ever, I had a personal reason to be active in the awareness campaign: one of my little cousins had just recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

After doing some initial research, I realized how many families are actually affected by this disease. According to Syracuse’s St. Joseph’s Hospital Cardiac Center, 1 out of every 3 kids is overweight or obese, and the number of Type 2 Diabetes cases among children is rising. For parents who worry about their child’s diet and exercise habits, it’s never too late to start healthy, even in the midst of the holiday season.

Eating Right

A good meal is what sets the tone for kids. With proper nutrition, “overweight” kids can overcome overeating and sugar addiction habits early on. At all times of the year, but especially with the upcoming holidays of St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, parents need to focus a child’s diet on healthier foods as much as possible.

Hearty roasted vegetables like squash, broccoli, green beans, carrots and spinach are all great options, while also allowing for smaller proportions of starchy veggies and grains like potatoes, rice, pasta and whole grain bread. This Easter dinner, try a healthy Mediterranean dish of roasted broccoli and harvest tomatoes, orange-scented green beans with toasted almonds, glazed mini carrots, cauliflower puree with garlic butter and stuffed acorn squash with cheddar and chard.

For smaller proportions, look for recipes that incorporate shrimp, turkey, chicken, mashed potatoes, cream corn and rice. Whole grain bread sides are also encouraged but should be moderately consumed. Parents can keep an eye on carbohydrates, sugar and glucose intake by reading labels and preparing meals that are low in sugar. It’s also important to make sure that kids are getting some treats and balancing their healthy meals with an occasional splurge. It’s safe for a few pieces of candy or a small slice of pie once in a while!

Exercise!
To burn off energy, kids need to get up and move around. Overweight and obese children often suffer more because they are sedimentary and prefer to stay inside rather than move around. The best way to get kids moving is to play games, dance and get creative with “exercise” so that it doesn’t seem so daunting.
Dance Off

Families can partake in a fun dance-off challenge, where everyone gets together and shows their best moves. Kids can make up their own dances to songs and receive silly awards for craziest moves, most daring spins, etc.  The point is to get kids to dance for an hour and burn calories in a silly way that’s also fun, becoming a fun family tradition tradition.

Family Fun Days
For one week, plan events every day to do as a family that are active and outdoors as part of “Family Fun Days.” This can be competitive or just for fun. One day could be a basketball game, the next scavenger hunt/Easter Egg Hunt or St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt for the leprechaun’s gold! . Each day can have a different yet active event to get kids up and moving around!

Carolyn is a 20-something year old with a passion for life, fitness and overall well-being. She is an avid cycler, golfer and has been known to bust some serious moves on the dance floor. Check out Carolyn’s blog at http://fullonfit.blogspot.com/!

Thanks Carolyn! That was great. I think her suggestions are something each of us need to take in to consideration. Let’s get {and keep!} our kids healthy! Be sure to stop by her blog and say HI!

How To… Pin Photos to Pinterest Quickly!

How To Pin Photos to Pinterest Quickly

In my 5 Blogging Tips {Part 1}, I said that it was very important to have a “Pin It” button on every post. That is still true, but sometimes there just isn’t one! And like I also said, the process is really annoying, if there isn’t one. So today, I am going to show you how to do it quickly – with or without a “Pin It” button.

This may come as old news to some of you, but I’m hoping to help others out!

Log in to your Pinterest account.

Hover over the “About” drop down menu.

About

Click “Pin It Button”.

Pin it

Scroll down, then click “Install Now”. And it will lead you through the steps and it should now appear on your bookmark bar. Now, when you go to a site and there isn’t a “Pin It” button by the picture, all you have to do is click the “Pin It” button on your bookmark bar and the pictures that are on that page will come up and you can choose which one you want to pin!

Ta-da!

Was that old news or did I help you?

Thoughts on Thursday: Family Values

And on to how I did on my goals.. First I will list the goal, then I will tell how I am doing!

1 – Ship to all 50 States!
In January, I shipped to over 10 states. {Not sure on the exact number yet. Haven’t done the final count.}

2 – Get at least a 3.5 GPA this semester.
I am not sure yet because the semester isn’t over until May.

3 – $5 savings plan.
I’m doing really good on this one!! I have saved up $115!!!! I have been SO strict with myself and have not spent a single $5 bill!

4 – Make a special jewelry piece each month and donate a percentage.
Rats! I forgot about this one! I need to make a piece for this month. I will do an announcement on that soon!

5 – Reach Premier with Posh
Unfortunately, I still have quite a way to go. I am still at Pink +1.

6 – Have 100 people on my team
My team got 3 new people this month, for a total of 16. But only 7 of them actually do something with the business! Dang!

7 – Have at least 200 blog followers
I’m a little over 1/4 of the way there!

8 – Have at least 3000 Two Million Miles Facebook fans
I’m at 870. I am 29% there!

9 – Have at least 5000 Jourdan’s {Handmade} Jewels Facebook fans
I am at 3,533 – 67% there!

10 – Hit 100 Etsy sales
Only at 37. ): Anyone wanna boost that number? Use code YOUROCK for 15% off your order!

11 – Have at least 3000 Perfectly Posh Facebook fans
I am at 2308 – 78% there!! WOOHOO!

12 – Have at least 5000 Jourdan’s Jewels friends on Facebook
I am going to change this one a bit.. I just created a new page for Jourdan’s Jewels, instead of a profile. So the new goal will be “Have at least 5000 Jourdan’s Jewels Facebook FANS
In that case, I am only 2% there! Help a girl out?

13 – Make Karsyn a big brother!
I REALLY want another baby, but I am going to wait a little while longer, despite my aching heart, because I don’t want to be pregnant for my wedding. {And saying that made me feel extremely bitchy because I know there are women out there that want to have a baby SO bad and they just can’t even have one. I need to be thankful for the one I have and not take it for granted. Sorry if I offended anyone!}

14 – Pay off all my debts – including my car!
My payoff is about $2000, so I am getting there! I told Kade that when we get our taxes back, I am putting $1000 on my car! Can’t wait!

15 – Move in to a house {preferably our OWN}
If you haven’t picked up on my hints yet, this is happening WAY sooner than I ever expected and I couldn’t be more excited! We are building a house!!! WOOOHOOOOO! We’ve already been accepted. We are doing the Self-Help housing. If you are not familiar with that, it’s where 6-8 families help build each other’s homes. None of you can move in until the houses are completely finished. By building the house, we do not have to pay a down payment. We will have “sweat equity” in the home. We build about 65% of the home. Certain things are contracted out that we can’t do, like digging the basement, electrical work {which my dad is doing in all the homes!!}, etc. I seriously cannot wait! My dad said they should be finished around Thanksgiving.

Are you still with me?!

What was your favorite post of mine? How are you doing on your goals?

Things I Think…

I was inspired by Bonnie to write this post.

{P.S. If you still haven’t checked her out, you need to! She’s HILARIOUS!}

Sorry if I offend anyone, that’s not my intention!!

I am going to tell you a few things I think..

thinking_21

THINGS I THINK WHILE DRIVING:

*Anyone over the age of 50 needs to retake their driving test every year.
*Anyone over the age of 60 needs to retake their driving test every month.
*Anyone over the age of 70 SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING! {Kidding.. Kinda..}
*If you don’t go the freaking speed limit, I am going to freak the hell out!
*I swear to the good guy above that if another car makes it so I can’t pass this dude in front of me..
*Riding my ass will NOT make the person in front of me go faster.
*Ever heard of a blinker?! Jackass!
*Don’t you DARE pull in front of me.
*Get off your damn phone and pay attention!
*I {almost} wish I would’ve just let you hit me so that I could get a new bumper.

{If you haven’t noticed already, I have EXTREMELY bad road rage!}

THINGS I THINK WHILE AT THE GROCERY STORE:

*Did you honestly think you looked good when you left the house?
*Crack kills.
*You could get yourself all ready and lookin’ good but could give a shit less about your kid? She looks like an orphan!
*Cashier: “Out of $20?” – Me: “No, let me just give you a couple more bills so that you can just hand them back to me. YES, OUT OF $20!”
*Cashier: “Will that be all for you today?” – Me: “No, I’d like all this invisible stuff, too.”
*Where the frick did the good Cordon Bleus go and how come no one in this department knows?!
*Why are the mayo and mustard on the candy aisle?
*Why is it that when I don’t get ready, I see everyone I know, but when I get all ready, I don’t see anyone?

THINGS I THINK WHILE COOKING:

*Why can’t you cook me dinner?
*Can’t you just make yourself something?
*I hate cooking.
*This recipe calls for brocoli? Forget it. I’m not making this.

So what do you think while driving or while dinner or while cooking?
